Ilkka Pyysiainen's book explores the cognitive science of religion and how it can be used to understand beliefs about superhuman agents. He argues that the human ability to attribute beliefs and desires to others forms the basis of conceptions of supernatural agents and that beliefs about supernatural agency are natural and intuitive. Pyysiainen uses ethnographical and survey materials to show recurrent patterns in beliefs about supernatural agents in both folk-religion and formal theology.
